1. The system requirements are listed needing Word 2000 and Visio 2000. Do you know of any upgrade pricing if I already have and earlier version of either application?

2. When I select "Small Project" in the Project Properties Editor, WBS is not checked. However, I need to get to the WBS to enter my task data. What's going on?

In the Cadence methodology, it's not necessary to include a complete work breakdown structure in the finished project plan. In order to enter data, however, you will need access to the WBS editor. When you're ready to enter data in your plan, manually check the WBS checkbox on the Navigator to access the WBS editor. When you're ready to print your plan, uncheck WBS in the navigator.

3. When I put a period in the file name, I can't find my saved ProjectMaster file!

ProjectMaster does not handle extraneous periods in file names like other applications. For example: project.master.cmc. Your ProjectMaster file may be corrupted if you include extra periods in the file name.

4. Does ProjectMaster automatically save my file at any interval?

No. In order to save your ProjectMaster file, you must manually click the "Save" icon on the menu bar or select File>Save. As with any application which generates large data files, it's highly recommended to save your file often.

5.  When printing a Project, or performing an "Export to Word" only one week shows on a Schedule page. This causes a large number of schedule pages to be generated when a project of long duration is tracked by day and has a large number of activities.

This was a design decision made early in the software development process. There are several options to consider:

  • Remove some of the columns currently selected to print within the Schedule Layout Editor. This will allow more calendar data to display on a page
  • Print the schedule to a larger printer, such as an E-size plotter
  • Change the schedule increment to weeks - if possible

6.  Why am I limited to 16 resources in the Resource Editor in ProjectMaster?

Beyond that level isn't practical. As you approach this upper level consider using the core team and extended team application where the person on the left side of the Responsibility Matrix represents the extended team member.

9.  What's CadenceConfig, and how do I apply it to my Microsoft Project schedule?

A: CadenceConfig is a configuration file that will adapt your Microsoft Project schedule to the Cadence design, changing the scheduling lines, shapes, and colors, and rearranging relevant columns. The result is a schedule that more closely matches that of the Cadence Wall Charts and course material.

In Microsoft Project 98 and 2000, "Config" files are now templates, and they're much easier to use than their predecessors. We've provided the template files for you free of charge, just click here to visit the download page. You'll also find instructions there for creating your own Cadence template file for Microsoft Project.

10.  Where can I purchase a copy of Visio 2000?

Contact your local reseller. You can also contact Cadence directly for current pricing and availability: 800-448-0173.

11.  Why can I only view three levels on the Work Breakdown Structure when I entered five levels in the editor?

A: The Work Breakdown Structure is designed to display the top three levels on the project and is used primarily as a planning tool. The schedule will display all five levels of activities and is used as a control tool on the project. To view all five levels, open the Schedule Layout Editor and select to display "All Activities".

Platform Notes

While Cadence is only supporting ProjectMaster as installed on Windows 98, NT4.0 (Service Pack 5) and 2000, We have done some limited testing in other environments. Our results follow.

Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server

  1. Run Setup from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel
  2. Select All Users for installation
  3. Install Visio Setup
  4. Setup will prompt you to reboot after installing the Visio Service Pack

After rebooting, the system will continue with the installation/update. Our installation did not require a second reboot

Issues

The Terminal Server Licensing Service may have issues which prevent users from logging on. The resolution is fairly simple: in Control Panel, Services, select Terminal Server Licensing and stop the service. Set Startup to Disabled. It's important to note that disabling the Licensing service stops the monitoring of license compliance.

At this time, Cadence has no plan to release ProjectMaster for any operating system platform other than Microsoft Windows.

Comments & Suggestions

As of release, Cadence will be developing our own project plan for future releases of ProjectMaster. We value the opinions and suggestions of our customers and welcome any input you may have. If you've got a wish list in mind, let us know!
